Today, as many as 15 million people have food allergies. According to a 2011 study published in the journal Pediatrics (in “The Prevalence, Severity, and Distribution of Childhood Food Allergy in the United States) an estimated 8% of children have at least one food allergy, a projected total of 5.9 million children across the population. Also 30 to 50% of all anaphylaxis is because of food allergy.
According to modern medicine there is no cure for food allergies. Strict avoidance of food allergens and early recognition and management of allergic reactions to food are important measures to prevent serious health consequences. (Ref: U. S. Food and Drug Administration- Centre for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. Food allergies: What you need to know. 2008. Retrieved fromhttp://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/ffalrgn.html)
Treatment of food allergy starts with understanding - the pattern of the allergies in the Ayurvedic perspective, the doshic involvement, the tissue level it has invaded and the avastha/stage of the disease. If the kids are on medicines like steroids or anti histamines, they have to be phased out slowly. Then with the help of safe herbal preparations the body is detoxified. Symptoms like skin problems, respiratory and digestive disorders are also simultaneously treated using Ayurvedic medicines. Practically we find it difficult to just rely upon tests to understand what the body is allergic to. At times these tests may be misleading. Hence by assuming that the kid is allergic to all foods management is done in the beginning. This is a better way as there have been instances where children pick up more allergies as they grow up.
After the basic detoxification of body is over next comes desensitising the allergic foods. Direct introduction of allergic food tends to bring more severe reactions and hence is not recommended. In the desensitisation procedure medicated food is given. Allergic foods are processed with appropriate herbs and introduced to the children in a small quantity. The changes are monitored and the quantity of food is steadily increased. For a child allergic to a specific food (as milk) - the methodology starts with administration of minimum quantity of the allergic food (say with 3ml of medicated milk). The quantity of the allergic food (milk) and the medicine is increased and decreased in proportion to the allergic reactions. This is continued till such time the child is able to consume pure milk without medication.
Heart disease is the third major killer disease of 21st century. Heart conditions (like cardio myopathy, myocardial infarction, mitral valve prolapse, etc) are identified according to Ayurvedic understanding and treated using internal medicines and external treatments. Specific herbs along with a diet tailored to the condition are administered internally for a period of time. This methodology removes the vitiated doshas from the channels of the heart and regulates the vayu flowing through.
Apart from internal medicines external treatments like uro vasti, pichu, pizhichal and lepas help in strengthening the heart as well. Depending on the condition certain Panchakarma procedures are also advised. Patients who have undergone surgery can also get benefitted by such procedures to prevent further attacks. Also people with strong family history of heart problems get benefitted by prophylactics.
One must understand that keeping the blood sugar levels under control “numerically” doesn’t mean that the disease is under control- because if a disease is under control then patients with “numerically” controlled sugar levels must not suffer from complications in later life. According to Ayurveda diabetic complications occur only when the disease is not under control and when it becomes chronic invading deeper tissues. Diabetes is supposed to be under control only when a person (who is not on any medication) still urinates less (not more than 6 times in a day), with no turbidity in urine and has absence of other symptoms of diabetes.
Treatments of diabetes include correction in diet, gradual withdrawal from insulin and other anti-diabetic medicines with gradual introduction of Ayurvedic medicines, yoga and Panchakarma treatments (if required). Special treatments might be required if the patients exhibit complications like diabetic carbuncle, non healing ulcer, neuropathy, etc.
Skin diseases (like psoriasis, eczema, skin allergies etc) and non-healing ulcers are a result of blood getting impure due to vitiation of all the three doshas (namely- vata, pitta and kapha). Treating all three doshas at the same time is a difficult task and thus complicates treatment procedures. As skin diseases become chronic it invades deeper tissue levels and the curability becomes difficult. Skin diseases of recent origin are amenable to treatment with internal medicines alone. But chronic skin diseases require repeated cleansing (vamanam, virechanam and rakta mokshanam) followed by internal medicine and alteration in diet.
The Arthritic spectrum of Rheumatoid arthritis, Osteo arthritis, Gout are considered in Ayurveda as ama vata, sandhigata vata, rakta vata based on the affliction of doshas. While these patients are continuously administered pain killers, disease modifiers, mineral tablets and steroids endlessly the patient’s disease progressively afflicts and deteriorates the joints. Once the degeneration goes beyond repair they are left only with joint replacement surgeries. But there is a limit to surgeries and the number of joints that can be replaced too.
Diet correction, Ayurvedic medicines and Panchakarma are the best options in such cases. It helps in addressing the disease from the root by removing the causative defective doshas and allowing healthy tissues to regrow. Depending upon the age and chronicity of the condition degeneration is reversible. Patients are able to lead a pain free, healthy, side effect free life- without taking painkillers, steroids and avoiding joint replacement surgeries.
